Texas Longhorns Softball To Face Aggies, Host Regional
The hope of winning the 2023 Big 12 Softball Championship title came crashing down for the Texas Longhorns on Saturday after a 6-1 loss to the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners in the title game. However, after Texas' destiny in the NCAA Tournament was released on Sunday, the Longhorns realized they have more to look towards: A national title.
Texas will enter the NCAA Division I Softball Championship tournament as the No. 13 overall seed. This pick marks the 18th consecutive time the Longhorns were selected to the NCAA Tournament Field and the 23rd time overall.
No. 1 seed and defending 2022 national champions, the Sooners, have been chosen to enter the NCAA Tournament at the top of the list and are undoubtedly marked as the favorite after a dominant 51-1 season record.
Coming off of a 42-13-1 record, Texas was chosen to host the Austin Regional this weekend consisting of Big East champions, Seton Hall, Texas State, from the Sun Belt Conference, and the Longhorns' historic in-state rival, Texas A&M, out of the Southeastern Conference.
Due to the Longhorns failed attempt to reach a top-eight seed from the NCAA selection committee, if Texas were to advance to the super-regional round, they would be forced to travel.
One of the four teams from the Austin Regional will advance to the super regional next week to face the winner of the Knoxville Regional in a double-elimination series, where Tennessee, the No. 4 national seed, is hosting Indiana, Louisville, and Northern Kentucky.
The Longhorns will kick off its tournament opener on Friday, May 19 against Seton Hall at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
