UCLA Football: Big-Time 2024 DB Schedules Official Westwood Visit
2024 safety Reggie Powers is currently one of the most hotly pursued defensive backs in the entire country.
Originally a commitment to Michigan State, the Ohio native softened on his verbal pledge in the wake of the Mel Tucker dismissal. Since opening up his recruitment, a host of schools have reportedly been interested in his services.
Chief among them, are Oklahoma and UCLA.
According to a report from Allen Trieu of 247Sports, Powers has scheduled two official visits. The 4-star safety will visit Oklahoma officially on Oct. 21. A week later, Powers will be in Westwood for UCLA's clash against Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes.
Powers has been drawing rave reviews based on his play so far this year during his senior year. He's a physical, downhill safety with above-average speed and terrific anticipatory skills. Powers already looks like a college safety, and probably won't need much time in the weight room before being able to contribute early.
UCLA would love to land Powers for a number of reasons. The secondary could use a jolt of talent. As currently constituted, the Bruins have two defensive backs committed for this 2024 class: Jamir Benjamin from the Detroit area, and Khristian Dunbar-Hawkins from Orange County.
Benjamin is more of a pure corner/slot corner, and Dunbar-Hawkins can function at both corner and safety. Powers, however, is a true safety with the potential frame to even play outside linebacker. At the very least, Powers can be a strong safety with the skills to come down in the box and attack the line of scrimmage.
As currently constituted, UCLA has 12 commitments from high school prospects. With Chip Kelly usually opting to sign half of his recruiting classes from the transfer portal ranks, Powers is literally one of the few 2024 high school prospects UCLA is still pursuing. As such, it's quite evident he's a major priority for the program.
