College football is back, and one of the premiere matchups from the opening weekend pits a West Coast program and an island school against each other.

Neither UCLA or Hawaii is ranked in the AP or USA Today Coaches Poll heading into the season. The Bruins did, however, pick up votes in each, and they ranked No. 6 in the SI Pac-12 Preseason Power Rankings.

UCLA finished 2020 with back-to-back losses, closing things out at 3-4. The Bruins were 2-2 at home and posted an identical 2-2 record against the spread in those games.

Hawaii wrapped up its 2020 season with a 5-4 record and a New Mexico Bowl victory. The Rainbow Warriors were 1-2 on the road and owned the same 1-2 record against the spread as an away team.

Third-year starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson returns to the Bruins after getting named to the Second Team All-Pac-12 alongside tight end Greg Dulcich last season. Running back Brittain Brown, left tackle Sean Rhyan, safety Qwuantrezz Knight, defensive end Mitchell Agude and linebacker Caleb Johnson are all returning as well, with running back Demetric Felton and defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa standing out as UCLA's lone notable departures.

Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro will be Hawaii's full-time starter for the second consecutive season after briefly rotating in the in 2018 and 2019. He was the Rainbow Warriors' leading rusher as well in 2020. First Team All-Mountain West linebacker Darius Muasau, Second Team All-Mountain West cornerback Cortez Davis and linebacker-safety hybrid Khoury Bethley all return to head up a defense that allowed 152.6 passing yards and 212.3 rushing yards per game last year.

UCLA owns the all-time head-to-head series 3-0, winning the last game 56-23 in 2017.
