UCLA Football: Bruins Will Reportedly Fire Chip Kelly Soon
With a 34-34 career record through his six seasons in Westwood, head coach Chip Kelly hasn't exactly endeared himself to the UCLA fan base.
When he was initially hired, many were expecting the famed tempo-based blur offense he perfected in Eugene during Oregon's dominant four-year run. Instead, Kelly opted for more of a pro-style approach which hasn't exactly led to a ton of success.
Relatively poor recruiting, a reportedly lacking NIL program, and zero bowl wins have resulted in a fan base seemingly ready for a change in leadership.
According to 247Sports publisher Jason Scheer, it appears as if UCLA might be moving on from its head coach after all.
Kelly appeared to solidify his job after trouncing USC on the road two weeks ago. However, a lackluster effort this past weekend versus UC rival Cal at home -- where the Bruins lost 33-7 -- may have re-opened the discussion as to whether Kelly is the best option for the team moving forward into the Big 10.
UCLA is in a bit of a precarious spot. AD Martin Jarmond has been mum publicly on Kelly's future with the program. It isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of the six-year head coach. At some point, Jarmond will have to address Kelly's status -- especially with those on social media quite discontent with Kelly's tenure.
If the Bruins are to make a change, they'll have to do so after missing out on Jonathan Smith. The former Oregon State head coach grew up in the shadow of the Rose Bowl and has clear ties to the region having worked for both OSU and Washington. He recently inked a multi-year deal with Michigan State.
Should Kelly be let go, one could see UCLA pursuing the likes of Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch, Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck, Ohio State OC Brian Hartline, and current DC D'Anton Lynn (among others).
