UCLA Football: Chip Kelly Calls for More Consistency in Run Game
As the UCLA Bruins continue their season, they have a clear need to focus on. That would be making sure that the running game continues to be successful.
UCLA wants to be more consistent with their ground game moving forward. Head coach Chip Kelly spoke about this and what he wants to see.
“I think there were flashes and there were times we looked really, really good,” Kelly said. “And there were other times when, for lack of a better term, we left some meat on the bone. We need to continue to grow on the offensive side of the ball. Statistically, when you look at it, we did rush for a lot of yards but Collin had a little bit to do with that too himself. That was a little bit different schematic changeup that we hadn’t shown in the past. Collin did a good job of really taking advantage of what we had. But just we need to be more consistent in terms of just being able to rush the football.”

Getting the running game going would also vastly help the Bruins passing offense. Quarterback Dante Moore has struggled over the last few weeks, so leaning on the run game makes all the sense in the world.
Carson Steele has had a great year so far for the Bruins, and they need to rely on him going forward. Over the six games played, Steele has rushed for 523 yards on 93 carries, with three touchdowns as well.
If the team can set up the run, it would heavily open up the passing attack, allowing UCLA to be even more dynamic. The Bruins' offense has been a little up and down in recent weeks, but they are at their best when they run the ball effectively.
Even against Oregon State this past weekend, they played much better once the running game got going. They went away from it to start the game, which ultimately cost them.
Moving forward, the Bruins team's identity needs to be running the ball effectively and playing strong defense. If they do this, they will be a tough team to beat down the stretch of the season.
