The UCLA Bruins have made their quarterback decision for the upcoming week, with Ethan Garbers emerging as the chosen starter. 

The redshirt junior managed to secure his spot against tough competition from true freshman Dante Moore and transfer Collin Schlee, making it one of the most closely-watched quarterback battles nationwide. Coach Kelly revealed his decision recently, opting to entrust the role to an experienced member of the team.

Garbers spoke to the media after learning he got the nod for the starting job, expressed his gratitude for winning the role, and highlighted the value of his prior experiences in navigating the challenge ahead.

“It’s definitely going to help because my first collegiate start was at Utah in a tough environment and place to play,” Garbers said. “… I think what’s going to help is that I’ve sat behind a starter for two years, who is going on to do stuff in the NFL and play great, so I kind of know and have my own routine figured out … so I’m excited and ready to go.”

Although Garbers will be the starter, both Dante Moore and Collin Schlee will also see playing time. The specifics of their roles and timing remain undisclosed.

Garbers' journey to the QB1 spot has been marked by his participation in 18 games, during which he has achieved a commendable 64.8% completion rate. His track record includes 599 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, and four interceptions. Transitioning from a backup position to the starting quarterback won't be a simple task, but the confidence Kelly and the coaching staff have placed in him suggests they believe he's up to the challenge.
