UCLA Football Linebacker Jake Newman Enters Transfer Portal
Another member of the Bruins' scout team is leaving Westwood.
UCLA football linebacker Jake Newman has entered the NCAA transfer portal, he announced Thursday on Twitter. Newman is the second Bruin to enter the portal since the start of spring camp, joining safety Jelani Warren, who entered back on April 5.
Newman has three years of eligibility remaining, thanks to one redshirt season and an extra year of COVID-19 eligibility.
Newman was a three-star recruit coming out of St. John Bosco (CA) in 2020, and he was one of three players from his high school to join the Bruins that offseason. Before he committed to UCLA, Newman had additional offers from Duke, Colorado, Penn State, Louisville, Nevada, Michigan, Colorado State, Oregon State, San Diego State and Missouri.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound prospect arrived in Westwood as a safety, but didn't take the field in either of his first two seasons. Newman eventually made the change to linebacker, and he was credited with one assisted tackle against Utah on Oct. 8, 2022.
A total of 10 players left the Bruins via the transfer portal between Dec. 5 and Jan. 18. The winter dead period ended on April 15, though, and the portal will remain open until April 30.
Last year, linebacker Caleb Johnson, defensive lineman Odua Isibor and safety Elisha Guidry all entered the portal during spring camp.
The back end of the linebacker corps has been thinned out a bit by the portal this offseason, with Newman joining Erich Osteen, Jeremiah Trojan and Erich Osteen. Inside linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. has brought in plenty of reinforcements, though, in the form of Cal transfer Oluwafemi Oladejo and four freshmen – four-star Tre Edwards, three-star Solomone Malafu, three-star Ty Lee and three-star Donavyn Pellot.
