UCLA Football News: DL Departs ASU Game With Leg Injury
While attempting a tackle of Arizona State University Sun Devils quarterback Trenton Bourgue (who's playing through an ankle injury), UCLA Bruins defensive lineman Gary Smith III appeared to injure his leg.
Ben Bolch of The Los Angeles Times writes that Smith, unable to walk under his own power, had to be helped off the field for the Bruins, suggesting it was a fairly severe ailment.
This is a significant loss for the program, which is struggling to score against an aggressive ASU defense despite being the better, healthier team, playing at home at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. In fairness, Chip Kelly is starting ostensible third-string quarterback Collin Schlee over the supposedly healthy Ethan Garbers and Dante Moore, both of whom had started every game between them this season prior to this moment, who's doing him no favors tonight.
Both Garbers and Moore got injured during the club's 27-10 loss to Arizona last week, forcing Schlee, a good runner but inaccurate passer, into action.
At present, with just a shade over two minutes left in the third quarter, the 2-7 Sun Devils lead the 6-3 Bruins by a field goal, 3-0.
