WATCH: Otito Ogbonnia, Qwuantrezz Knight on UCLA's suffocating defense vs. Hawaii
UCLA football defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia and safety Qwuantrezz Knight speak to the media following the Bruins’ 44-10 win over Hawaii on Saturday.
Build confidence heading into LSU game?
Otito Ogbonnia: Overall I think we did well, definitely a lot of things to correct and we’ll see that come Sunday and Monday. We’re gonna try to replicate the same thing next, week, it’s gonna take a lot of work.
Qwuantrezz Knight: Like Tito said, I feel like we went out there and did a pretty good job on defense, wran to the ball well. That’s something we’ve been harping on this year. A great defense runs to the ball and I feel like we did that good, of course we left a couple plays out there but this week coming up we got a big week, it’s not gonna change what we do. We’re just going to zone in and do what we’re supposed to do.
Looked dominant, this a special team?
OO: 100%. It’s been a long time coming, 4 years being here, putting in that hard work and having some ups and downs. We lost all our games last year by 15 points total, so just having that kind of pain in our minds, knowing that we have to finish, I think that’s what we saw today.
QK: I feel like this team can do whatever we want to do. It’s gonna be completely up to us, but like Tito said we have a very experienced team. We knew exactly what we needed to come in and do, what we needed to show to the world. We have to play 3 whole phases – offense, defense and special teams so we’re gonna get back to the team and get ready for the next game
Way you attack, how do you keep teams off balance?
OO: I think it’s just a lot of our coverage stuff, we’re kind of disguising a lot of things so it definitely has to make the offense check a lot of things. The offensive quarterback kind of looking back to the sideline and get their checks so that’s kind of one of the main things we do.They change up a lot of their plays, we might try to run some way because we moved late, that’s how we keep you on your heels and we don’t come out and do anything too crazy.
How big is it starting off with such a good defensive performance compared to last year's rough season opener on defense?
OO: I think it's huge mentally – never want to start the season off with a loss. I think it's really important to this program to do that dn to the team. So it definitely gives us more hope and enthusiasm going into future games. Being able to understand that, knowing what we can do when we put the work in, knowing what its gonna take week in and week out.
QK: Like Tito said, I know they scored ten points, but we didn't want them to score at all. So that's why I said we have a lot to work on. Because we want to be a team that completely shuts offenses down. We don't want them to be able to do anything. Like you said before, our disguises is everything with the defense and the offense never know what we're doing. I feel like that is our strength, just keeping that, I think we'll be alright.
Nice to be able to add new players (Kaho, Charbonnet, Cam Johnson) to experienced team?
QK: I feel like that's huge. We had a good amount of transfers that came in and you can see today how much they help us a whole lot in making this team really go in the direction we build on and wanna be at. Just having guys like Zach, Ale and Cam they are just gonna help us a whole lot and its gonna be on us how far we go this year.
OO: Like Q Knight said, I think its really important, those guys' being here. Seeing what they can bring in such a short amount of time. Such a short amount of time, them jelling with the team we have with all these transfers. It's been great having all these new guys andthat can contribute right away and knowing we did well on the recruiting side of things. Brought some really special guys in.
