UCLA Basketball: Dylan Andrews Given Huge School Honor For Performance Against USC
Sophomore UCLA Bruins men's basketball guard Dylan Andrews notched a team-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor (including a perfect 3-of-3 from long range) in leading the Blue and Gold to an unexpected 65-50 blowout of the USC Trojans on the latter's home turf last Saturday.
The 6'3" starter played 37 minutes, and also chipped in four dimes (against one turnover) and two boards.
Accordingly, he earned a massive accolade from the school at large. Per UCLA Communications, he has been named the latest Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the rival game Saturday night. It's his first-ever such honor.
It's been an uneven 2023-24 season for UCLA. The club stands at a sub-optimal 9-11 overall record, and 4-5 in the Pac-12. If we zoom in a bit, it does seem like the team has taken some kind of leap recently. The Bruins have gone 3-1 across their last four contests, and that lone loss was the result of a fluky come-from-ahead loss, in a game they had led by as much as 19 points.
Although Mick Cronin's young squad has been quite enthusiastic defensively all year, UCLA has at times struggled to score. That seems to be slowly changing, with players like Andrews being more empowered to shoot.
Even though the team shot a rough 35.7% from the field against the Trojans, the Bruins' three-point shooting (7-of-16, 43.8%) and foul shooting (18-of-24 shooting, 75%) served as testament to some much-needed offensive improvement.
