UCLA Football: UCLA Running Back Commit Shines with Stellar Performance Against Mater Dei
The lights were on, the stage was set, and in a football game featuring 76 future Division One athletes, Cameron Jones shined brighter than all.
The class of 2024 running back paved the way for the St. John Bosco Braves all night, rushing for 134 yards, a pair of touchdowns on the ground, and one through the air, for good measure. He did so against the top-ranked Mater Dei Monarchs. His diverse skillset was on full display throughout Bosco's commanding win as the 6-2, 235-pound Jones reminded everybody in attendance exactly what makes him special.
In an interview with SB Live's Mitch Stephens, Jones' head coach had this to say about his starting running back:
"We learned on him the entire game," St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro said. "You know we have the heart of a champion and until someone knocks us off we're going to continue to fight. Cameron is a big part of that heart."
So, what might UCLA fans take away from this special night for Jones? As the feature back for one of the best high school programs in the country, Jones had already established himself as one of the top running backs in the country. But putting together a performance like this against the best team in the country? It only further solidified Jones' standing. To put it metaphorically, Jones still rose to the top in a game featuring the crème de la crème of high school football.
He already has the build of an NFL running back, and after doing what he did against that level of competition, it's only natural to expect he would be able to step into the running back rotation right away in Chip Kelly's offense.
AllBruins.com will continue to follow Jones' final high school season as his Bosco Braves look to make a deep run into the postseason.
