UCLA Football: DeShaun Foster Won't Commit to Ethan Garbers as Starter
UCLA football has begun Spring Practice under new head coach DeShaun Foster. One of the primary questions for the Bruins heading into their first season under Foster and in the Big Ten is if rising senior Ethan Garbers will remain the team's starting quarterback.
Garbers was the starter for UCLA during most of the 2023 season. With Dante Moore transferring to Oregon, Garbers appears to be the option for QB1. Foster is not ready to officially name Garbers the starter at this point, but Garbers is taking the first reps for now.
"He's taking the first reps right now, but it's still open. All positions are open right now," Foster told reporters after Tuesday's practice.
Though Foster would not guarantee Garbers is the starter, he was complimentary of what he's seen from Garbers in Spring Practice and the leadership Garbers has shown so far.
"He looked pretty good. I like how he practices. He's from Orange County, we have a certain swag to us," Foster told reporters. "I just love his energy. My first pillar is discipline ... he's getting the guys going, holding them to a standard that they want to be held to."
This continues the support Garbers and Foster have shown for each other since Foster was announced as UCLA's head coach. When Foster was officially named the Bruins' new head coach, Garbers posted, "Perfect man for the job! We are going to have something special in Westwood! We need the fans support!!"
While Garbers has not officially been named the starter, he looked good as he appeared in eight games for UCLA in 2023. Garbers completed 67.1% of his passes for 1,135 yards, along with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions.
