Gabriela Jaquez, sister of Jaime, commits to UCLA women's basketball

When Gabriela Jaquez got a scholarship offer from the Bruins on July 16, her commitment seemed like an inevitability.

Two weeks later, she made things official.

The 6-foot wing from Camarillo High School (CA) verbally committed to UCLA women's basketball Friday. Jaquez was sitting on offers from Utah, Rice, Loyola Marymount, Oklahoma, Washington State and USC, but wound up picking the same school as her older brother Jaime, who led UCLA men's basketball in points, rebounds, blocks and steals this season en route to the program's first Final Four appearance since 2008.

Jaquez has a chance to achieve a similar status with the Bruins, considering the women's program has never made it past the Elite Eight in the NCAA era. She won't be alone in that pursuit either, considering how busy of an offseason UCLA's coaching and recruiting staffs have had.

The Bruins added three graduate transfers this spring, in addition to transfer big Angela Dugalic and her three remaining years of eligibility. Jaquez is UCLA's fifth commit for its class of 2022, joining five-star point guard Londynn Jones, five-star combo guard Paris Clark, Spanish standout guard Elena Buenavida and 6-foot-4 German forward Lina Sontag.

UCLA fans had long had their eye on Jaquez, both due to her brother's success in Westwood as well as her own success in local high school ball.

Jaquez scored 52 points in a playoff game for Camarillo on May 29, capping off a year that earned her several honors on both the county and state levels. According to MaxPreps, Jaquez averaged career highs across the board this season, including 31.7 points, 14.8 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game on 48% shooting from the field.

ESPN ranked Jaquez as the No. 63 prospect in her class and rated her as a four-star recruit.

Jaquez also plays softball at Camarillo, but there is no word on whether she'll be suiting up for the Bruins on the diamond as well.
