Football: Mike Vick Situation A Learning Experience For Jim Mora
New UConn football head coach Jim L. Mora has been fortunate enough to coach 29 players, who eventually went on to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. One of those former pupils is legendary kicker Morten Anderson, whom played for Mora during his time with the Atlanta Falcons.
Now host of the Great Dane Nation podcast, Anderson recently had Mora on his show to discuss the future of UConn Football and also some of the valuable learning experiences early on in his career, most notably his dealings with a young Mike Vick in Atlanta and his NFL suspension for dog fighting.
“There were warning signs…I really liked Mike as a human being and he was a really good player,” Mora began. “I had no indications of what he was doing off the field and maybe I was blinded by the connection I had with him. I wish I had walked into the situation more eyes wide open but it was my first head coaching job and I think he may have benefited from me being more firm early with him.”
The exchange between Anderson and Mora is an enlightening look as to how the football coach profession can come with a roller coaster ride of issues to deal with both on and off the field. Obviously, this was not the most ideal situation for a first-time head coach but it was a learning opportunity for Mora to grow from.
As to how Mora feels about Vick since then? “I never knew or saw the things he was doing off the field. He has grown tremendously since that.”
