Softball: Huskies Drops Game 3 Against Villanova on Senior Day
Storrs, CT – UConn falls to Villanova 4-2 in the series finale and final game of the regular season. The Huskies finish the regular season with a record of 36-16 overall and 20-4 in the BIG EAST.
Marybeth Olson started in the circle for the Huskies. She pitched a lockdown 4.1 innings only giving up four hits and struck out seven.
The Huskies got on the board early in the first inning jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Olivia Sappington started it off with a single to right center scoring Briana Marcelino. Sami Barnett delivered with a double to score Jana Sanden.
Meghan O'Neil came in relief for Olson in the fifth inning. She went on to finish the game going 2.2 innings, with a strikeout.
Villanova got a run in the fifth inning on a sac fly but the Huskies preserved the lead on a heads up play by O'Neil backing up the play at the plate. As the tying runner was attempting to advance to home on a wild throw off the sac fly, O'Neil was there to flip the ball to Barnett, getting the runner out at home to protect the lead.
Villanova went on to take the lead in the seventh inning scoring three runs giving them the 4-2 win.
UConn will now set their sights towards the BIG EAST Tournament which will begin Thursday afternoon. The first game is set for 12:00pm Central Time against the DePaul Blue Demons.
