RJ Davis Passes UNC Basketball Assistant on All-Time List
In the first UNC basketball game of this calendar year, a win at Pitt, RJ Davis moved to No. 9 on the all-time list of 3-point makes by Tar Heels. That night, he passed his head coach, Hubert Davis (197). Four days later, in a win at Clemson, he climbed to No. 8 over his former teammate, Caleb Love (200).
Then, in Wednesday night's 86-70 home win over unranked Louisville, Davis (now at 213 and counting) leapfrogged UNC assistant coach Jeff Lebo (211) on the way to his game-high 21 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, 4-for-7 from deep, and 5-for-5 at the line.
The senior guard added six rebounds, six assists, two steals, and only one turnover across his 36 minutes on the floor. It was just another stellar all-around performance by Davis, who stands alongside graduate center Armando Bacot as the two two-time ACC Player of the Week selections for the 2023-24 Tar Heels.
Next in his sight on the program's 3-point list are two at No. 5 with 221 makes apiece: Donald Williams and Rashad McCants.
Davis, averaging 3.1 threes per game as a senior, needs 16 more to match No. 4 Wayne Ellington (229), 20 to tie No. 3 Shammond Williams (233), and 53 — he's hit 52 this go-round at just past the halfway mark of the regular season — to reach No. 2 Joel Berry (266).
With 87 to go to break the UNC basketball record set by Marcus Paige (299), RJ Davis would have to boost his average considerably. Note that 3.8 per game from here on out would only be enough if he and the Tar Heels played three ACC Tournament and six NCAA Tournament contests following 14 more regular season bouts.
He's shooting a career-high 41.9 percent beyond the arc.
NEXT GAME: No. 4 UNC (14-3, 6-0 ACC) at unranked Boston College (11-6, 2-4 ACC), 2:15 p.m. ET Saturday (The CW)
