UNC Basketball: Tar Heel Depth Growing at Ideal Time of Year

Just in time for ACC play, several UNC basketball reserves have begun to show what they're capable of contributing.

Friday night's 105-60 home victory over unranked Charleston Southern allowed UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis to take a longer look than usual at his second unit. That's critical right now, given those reserves could prove pivotal across the rigorous ACC slate the next nine weeks.

And it sure sounds like the third-year head coach liked what he saw, as the ninth-ranked Tar Heels (9-3, 1-0 ACC) received 43 points from their bench, highlight by some career-high performances.

Here's what Hubert Davis noted about the backup weapons as a whole during his postgame press conference, commending the work they've put in behind the scenes:

"I have said before, the guys that play, those are the minutes they have earned through their preparation and through their practice. It's great that you can have guys like Jalen Washington, J Wit [Jae'Lyn Withers], Seth [Trimble]; those guys come off the bench and give you such positive play on both ends of the floor.

"I am really excited about the number of guys coming off the bench, having career-highs, getting that rhythm, getting that confidence because that is going to be something needed heading into the conference season."

NEXT GAME: at Pitt (9-3, 0-1 ACC), 7 p.m. ET Tuesday (ESPN)
