UNC Basketball: Tar Heel Champ Gets Waived by 76ers

Former UNC basketball forward Danny Green has enjoyed quite a career for a former second-round pick.

UNC basketball alum Danny Green is 36 years old and in his 15th NBA season, boasting career averages of 8.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 40.0 percent beyond the arc.

Few make it that long in the league.

So, no matter what happens from here, the 6-foot-6 wing from New York has done well for a guy wh

o heard his name in the middle of the second round at the 2009 NBA Draft following his senior-year NCAA title with the Tar Heels.

But on Friday night, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Philadelphia 76ers, who signed then-free agent Danny Green to a one-year deal in mid-September, have waived the UNC basketball product because "Philadelphia needed the roster spot to complete the [James Harden] trade with the Clippers."

Green played two games for the 2023-24 Sixers, going scoreless and adding only two rebounds, one assist, and one steal in his combined 18 minutes off the bench.

This season has marked Danny Green's second stint with the 76ers. He's played for six franchises, winning NBA championships with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, Toronto Raptors in 2019, and Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.

For now, Green is without an NBA home.

And the number of former Tar Heels in the league has fallen to eight:

  • Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson
  • Nets center Day'Ron Sharpe
  • Chicago Bulls guard Coby White
  • Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony
  • Houston Rockets wing Reggie Bullock
  • Phoenix Suns forward Nassir Little
  • Charlotte Hornets forward Leaky Black
  • Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes
