Dre Bly on The Advantage of Social Media and Selling UNC Football

Social Media has become the ultimate tool in securing the eyes of recruits. Dre Bly has taken note and is using it as a tactic to highlight the university he loves.

UNC Cornerbacks Dre Bly is not letting haters seep into his head when it comes to his coaching abilities. He knows he's made for this, and he's willing to let his actions do the talking.

COVID-19 has caused recruiting coaches to become creative in their access to players, showcasing their program virtually, and convincing them that their school is the top choice. UNC has taken the lead in becoming active on social media platforms and a priority by head coach Mack Brown.

"Jeremy (Sharpe) and I have talked a lot about social media and what's appropriate." Brown said, "We have to be careful because we're losing some serious stuff, and we're losing people; People are dying and getting very sick. We have to balance what's appropriate, what can be funny, and what we can enjoy."

Bly echoed Brown's sentiments and said that thanks to working in broadcasting and his kids, he's got a head start on social media and using it to his advantage,

"I mean again, I have kids, so I've been forced to understand Instagram and Twitter a little bit more so probably than some of these other parents and coaches, but when I retired and wanted to sort of seek broadcasting, and I was telling somebody earlier, 'I did an NFL broadcast at Bootcamp.'" Bly told reporters, "I was covering the Panthers in Charlotte doing a weekly show with WFNZ. I was forced to sort of get more involved on Twitter and Instagram. Yes, I have used it to my advantage."

Whether you like it or not, social media has made the transition of social distancing incredibly easier. Whether you're on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, each platform has been an intricate part of feeding the masses information, entertainment, and if you're in sports, connected.

"Partly how you use social media, I've been training, I've been mentoring guys for awhile. I just show what I do. And in some sense, it has helped me." Bly stated, "But again, right now we are trending in social media and any way that I can sell our program and sell the University of North Carolina, I'm going to do so."

UNC's ability to connect with recruits and their players puts them above the rest as youthful, and as the kids say, they're a trending topic. Their presence dominates social media platforms, allowing them to look open and honest to those they're recruiting.
