Recent UNC Football Commit 'Coming for That Fifth Star'
On Saturday night, Providence Day (N.C.) four-star and 2024 UNC football pledge Jordan Shipp racked up 234 yards and three touchdowns on 13 receptions in his team's season-opening 42-35 win over Northwestern (S.C.) at the Keep Pounding High School Classic in Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium.
During the 6-foot-2, 195-pound wideout's performance, Rivals' Adam Friedman posted on social media, "Jordan Shipp is going OFF."
At 1:30 a.m. ET, Shipp, who announced his commitment to the Tar Heels on July 16, responded to that post by pointing out a straightforward motivator behind his eye-popping stat line: "I'm coming for that 5th star."
While it's conceivable Jordan Shipp could achieve that goal, it's worth noting he has a considerable climb ahead, at least on the 247Sports 2024 Composite, before reaching five-star territory. He ranks No. 428 overall in the country, roughly 400 spots below the lowest-ranked five-star prospects, and No. 64 at his position.
Even so, after watching the following highlight of one of Shipp's most impressive catches on the night, courtesy of a pressured long heave from four-star Michigan pledge Jadyn Davis, there's no question that the UNC football staff reeled in a potential gem:
Here's a snippet of the most recent scouting report on Jordan Shipp from 247Sports' Gabe Brooks:
"Good-sized outside receiver who's somewhat of a polished technician considering he's entering his senior year of high school...Excellent short-to-intermediate target who knows how to leverage defenders into breaks and will work the middle of the field with disregard for his own safety. Consistent hands catcher with high-pointing acumen in timing and physical ability...Overall, a smooth operator who knows how to play the position and has produced impressive numbers for a championship-caliber high school team..."
Shipp is one of 26 verbal commits in a UNC football recruiting class that currently ranks No. 25 in the country, per 247Sports.
