USC baseball beats UCLA 6-4 in Pac-12 Tournament
Five RBI's from USC freshman Austin Overn sparked a 6-4 comeback win over UCLA in the Pac-12 Tournament on Tuesday.
The Trojans trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but one swing of the bat from Overn tied the game 4-4. On a two-strike pitch after failing to get a bunt down, Overn clobbered a Jake Brooks pitch over the right field fence to even the game.
One inning later, Overn was at it again hitting a two-RBI triple, which put USC ahead for good. Overn's 14th triple of the year brought home Ryan Jackson and Nick Lopez making the score 6-4. Lopez went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for USC.
"I wasn't trying to think too much because I had just messed up two bunts in a row," Overn said about his home run at-bat. "My approach was just find a way to not ground out into a double play."
In the top of the fourth inning, a three-run RBI double from UCLA's JonJon Vaughns put the Bruins up 4-1. The game was tied 1-1 prior to the bases clearing hit as both teams scored unearned runs in the third inning.
Caden Connolly earned the win on the mound for USC and Kyle Wisch recorded the save. Eric Hammond started for USC and pitched 3.1 inning allowing two earned runs. Brooks took the loss for UCLA.
The Trojans improved to 34-22-1 and most likely clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament with the win.
USC will play Washington on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in its next Pac-12 Tournament pool game from Scottsdale.
