Bronny James News: Conditions That Can Cause Cardiac Arrest
News broke early Tuesday morning that incoming USC Trojans star Bronny James had to be rushed to the hospital on Monday after suffering cardiac arrest amidst a workout at school. All reports state that the 18-year-old guard is in stable condition now and no longer in the ICU and we hope that all is well in terms of his health moving forward.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, cardiac arrest kicks in when one's heart stops pumping blood to the brain and other vital organs. Playing sports at a high level means that proper blood flow and oxygen levels are more important than ever.
To my knowledge, Bronny has never dealt with any serious health concerns like this before. Therefore, further research shows a number of conditions that could lead to cardiac arrest (according to Mayo Clinic Health System).
Chest Injury/Pressure
Seeing that basketball is a contact sport and college workouts/practices can get quite physical at times, a big blow to the chest area can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. James is a combo guard and handles the ball a lot while also priding himself on being a difference-maker on defense.
One damaging hit or even multiple to his chest area could have lead to this unfortunate Monday occurrence.
Oversized Heart Muscles
Heart muscles that grow too thick usually raise the risk of suffering cardiac arrest. This makes it much harder for blood to flow all throughout the body and goes hand in hand with the actual result.
Physical Stress/Exhaustion
This is where physical sports come directly into play as the stress athletes put on their body can directly lead to the body reacting in a negative manner when too much physical activity occurs. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, 1 out 3 cardiac arrests in athletes occurred after their workouts when they were already recovering but the body had undergone too much already.
Coronary Heart Disease
This specific heart disease has been labeled as the most common form and results from cholesterol getting packed into coronary arteries and not allowing blood to enter arteries consistently
Once again, we wish Bronny a speedy recovery and hope he is able to resume his normal lifestyle very soon!
