USC Men’s Basketball Team Announces 2023 Home Opener Vs In-State Rival /

Your USC Trojans men's basketball team has unveiled the date for its first home game of the 2023-24 NCAA season.

On Thursday, November 9th, Isaiah Collier and co. will host Cal State Bakersfield at the Galen Center.

Though Collier was the top-ranked high school senior among his graduating class last season, he is only the second-most discussed freshman on this starry USC team.

But the fate of the first remains decidedly up in the air.

Collier's fellow 18-year-old freshman guard Bronny James continues to recuperate from the cardiac arrest that caused him to collapse on the court during a Galen Center workout on July 24th. A thorough Mayo Clinic specialist's investigation has yielded the news that James has a treatable (but "functionally significant") congenital heart defect. James had to sit out his teammates' trip overseas for some preseason exhibition games last month, but he is currently on campus and attending classes.

When that actually means he'll return is somewhat unclear, though it seems like, barring any setbacks, he is at least targeting an on-court appearance with his new club at some point this season.

7'1" USC sophomore big man Vincent Iwuchukwu, himself a five-star recruit, suffered a cardiac arrest in the summer of 2022, ahead of his own Trojans debut. He eventually returned about halfway through the year, and averaged 5.4 points on 50.9% shooting, plus 2.5 rebounds, across his 14 available games games.
