In your USC Trojans' 81-70 victory over the Brown Bears on Sunday night, guard Boogie Ellis had a terrific game. The 6'3" fifth-year senior finished with 28 points.

It was an unnervingly close contest close throughout, and it's safe to say that without Ellis's performance there's a good chance the Trojans might have slipped up and lost this game in spite of Brown sitting at 1-5 and being in the Ivy League conference.

As praise for Boogie's excellent Performance, forward Kobe Johnson had this to say, per Evans of the OC Register:

“Excuse my language,” Johnson said, leaning into the mic, “but he’s that motha(expletive).”

“If we can keep him hot the entire year,” Johnson said, “he’s gon’ lead us very far in March.”

It's safe to say this team has a lot of chemistry, as Johnson and Ellis in particular are now in their 3rd year of being teammates.

The second half of Johnson's comment is the more interesting part of it, as he suggests that Ellis' keeping up this level of play come March, the Trojans could make a run on his back.

And, historically speaking, Johnson is right. Much of these teams that find a lot of success in March Madness are teams that have terrific guard play, and with the Trojans having arguably the nation's top back court in Isaiah Collier and Boogie Ellis, they've already taken the first step in the right direction when it comes to being consistent down the stretch.

Looking at teams like the 2021 National Champion Baylor Bears, the 2022 National Champion Kansas Jayhawks, and the 2023 National Champion UConn Huskies, the Trojans have a similar team construction which involves well-rounded play at the guard and wing positions, highlighted by elite rim protection down low.

With regards to Ellis in particular, he's a player who can go down as an All-American this year in his fourth season.

Boogie looks to improve on his 17.7 points-per-game average last season in which he was the Trojans leading scorer.

This year, with the true playmaker in Collier, which the Trojans have not had since Tahj Eaddy back in 2021, Ellis should have more opportunities to play off the ball and get better looks in space.

As a gifted shot Creator at all three levels, expect him to continue to be looked at as the primary scoring option for the Trojans.

With help in the backcourt in Collier and great play on the wing from Kobe Johnson, the nearing return of Vince Iwuchukwu, could make the Trojans a force down the stretch.
