USC Basketball: Former Trojan Joins NBA Title Contender As Free Agent
Even though your USC Trojans will have one of the best squads on paper heading into the 2023-2024 season, we also continue to keep a close eye on any players that used to suit up for the university and monitor how they are doing in their careers once the part ways with USC. It goes to show just how much they took all of the lessons they learned while in college and whether they are a positive reflection of the coaching staff's development.
And a former Trojan big man in Chimezie Metu has decided to sign with the Phoenix Suns on a one-year deal as he enters his sixth season in the NBA. This news was first shared by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
"Free agent forward Chimezie Metu has agreed to a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns, sources tell ESPN."
Let's take a look at his career thus far and if he will be able to find a valuable role within the Phoenix Suns in this new season. The San Antonio Spurs took a chance on the 6'11 forward in the 2018 draft as they selected him with the 49th pick in the second round. Metu spent two seasons with the organization where he saw action in 47 games and averaged two points to go with one rebound.
He then was brought in by the Sacramento Kings once his rookie contract was up and he saw some improvement as he lasted three seasons there and in 162 games, he averaged around six points and four rebounds per game. Seeing that the Suns will owe over $160 million next season to the likes of Kevin Durant, DeAndre Ayton, Bradley Beal and Devin Booker, someone like Metu was needed due to his value and production.
We wish him the best of luck in his next journey!
