USC Basketball Head Coach Andy Enfield Takes Responsibility for Upset Loss to UC Irvine
Your USC Trojans men's basketball team dropped its first game of the season Tuesday night, losing at the hands of UC Irvine at the Galen Center. It was an ugly game, and the Trojans couldn’t recover from multiple players being out with different injuries, losing by a score of 7-60.
They were missing their second-leading scorer, Boogie Ellis, who was out with an ankle injury. Not having him in the lineup seemed to hurt the Trojans offensive flow, and UC Irvine took advantage.
Freshman Isaiah Collier continued his impressive start to his career, scoring 23 points in the loss. He was one of the only players that seemed to show up in this matchup.
USC fought until the end, but they couldn’t overcome the injuries to their team. But head coach Andy Enfield doesn’t want to hear excuses, and he took the blame for the loss.
"We deserved to lose this game by the way we played, offensively especially. You can't shoot 28 percent, have 7 assists and 16 turnovers. It's frustrating. I know the players are very upset, and that's on me. I gotta figure out, even though we're shorthanded, figure out how to have better practices and obviously have to execute better offensively during the game."Per Andy Enfield via TrojansSports.com
Enfield said that the Trojans practices leading up to the game were some of the worst that he had seen, and it clearly carried over into the game itself. They will have to learn from this game and use it as motivation to not let it happen again this year.
Hopefully, the Trojans can get themselves healthy, and then we can see the full power of this team.
USC will have a few days off to figure out what went wrong Tuesday before they take on Brown this weekend at home.
