All Aboard the Muss Bus

It’s a new day for USC men’s basketball. The Trojans turn the page after 11 seasons with former coach, Andy Enfield. New USC coach Eric Musselman is a proven winner at multiple stops and USC fans should look forward to what he can bring to the table. Musselman led Arkansas to the Elite 8 in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Before Arkansas, Musselman was the coach at Nevada from 2015 to 2019. Under Musselman, Nevada made the NCAA tournament three times, including a sweet sixteen run in 2018.

Musselman was also the coach for the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings before he made the transition to college ball. He made the right choice. Musselman has a career record in college of 221-93. His winning percentage is .704.

USC is coming off a disappointing 15-18 2023 season. USC wasn’t lacking talent by any means; they just weren’t clicking as a unit.

Musselman hit the transfer portal hard the second he took the USC job. The Trojans landed high-level transfers Desmond Claude, Terrance Williams II, and Saint Thomas.

Desmond Claude played last season at Xavier. He is a 6 foot 6 guard who uses his size to attack the basket. That’s where he gets his money. Claude averaged 16.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game for the Musketeers last year. He will enter his third season when he suits up for the Trojans this year.

Terrance Williams II is an experienced 4-year player from Michigan. The 6 foot 7 forward put up 12.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists for the Wolverines last season. Williams played the 4 for most of last season, but he is still comfortable catching the ball on the perimeter. Last season, he developed a more fine-tuned three-point shot and knocked down 39.7% of his triples.

Saint Thomas was one of the best scorers in mid-major college basketball for Northern Colorado last season. Thomas was a double-double machine and in addition to averaging 19 points per game, he snagged 9.8 rebounds per game. The 6 foot 7 forward is heading into his fourth collegiate year after two seasons at Loyola Chicago and one at Northern Colorado. It will be interesting to see how his game translates from the Big Sky to Big Ten. If you can play, you can play, no matter what conference you're in.

With all these new players coming in, it will take some time for the Trojans to get rolling. However, they have the right coach for the job in Eric Musselman to compete in a loaded Big Ten once conference play starts.

The Muss Bus is just starting its engine in Los Angeles.
