USC Football: Star Transfer Bear Alexander Thriving As A Trojan
The biggest question that surrounded the USC Trojans this season was how their defense would hold up as the year went on. It was what held them back a year ago, and the program vowed to make sure they addressed the issues in the offseason.
They brought in multiple transfers and also were banking on some players having more experience in the system as well. And through the first three games of the new year, they have shown up in a big way.
The defense of USC has been a big factor in their success, as it allows the offense to play more freely. They aren’t worrying about having to score every single drive, because the defense is doing their part.
One transfer player that the Trojans were very excited about was edge rusher Bear Alexander from The University of Georgia. Alexander helped the Bulldogs win another National Championship last season, but he wanted more playing time, so he came to USC.
With the Bulldogs last year, Alexander posted nine tackles, with three for a loss and two sacks as a freshman. He never really got consistent time on the field, due to the level of talent that Georgia had.
Through three games, he has shined as a member of the Trojans. He has posted seven tackles, with one for loss and he has 0.5 sacks as well. But it’s the overall presence in the Trojans lineup that has been serving him well.
Opposing offenses know that he is there and can wreak havoc at all times, so they have to scheme against him. He allows for the other players to get pressure in the backfield as well because teams could double-team him.
He has been a breath of fresh air for this Trojans defense, and that has brought smiles to the face of the defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. If he can keep up this production, the Trojans will be in great shape for the rest of the year.
