USC Football: Caleb Williams Addresses Emotional Response To Washington Loss
Caleb Williams is used to winning.
As a high school sophomore, he led Gonzaga College High School to a WCAC Championship. In 2022, he went 11-1 in the regular season, winning the Heisman Trophy along the way before ultimately losing to Utah in the Pac-12 Championship game and Tulane in the Sugar Bowl.
So, when USC lost five of their final six games of the season, in a lot of ways, Williams wasn't sure how to respond.
The 21-year-old was criticized by some sports media figures and Twitter users for hugging his mother as he cried following the Trojans' 52-42 loss to No. 5 Washington. Life did not get much better for Williams, as USC lost their final two games against Oregon and UCLA to likely end the presumed first pick in the NFL Draft's tenure at USC.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times' Ryan Kartje, Williams said that this season was a learning experience and that he had no regrets in how he handled himself following some of USC's tough losses.
“There’s a time and a place for everything,” Williams said. “But I’m far from ashamed about showing my emotion after any of the losses this year. It shows truth. It shows care. All that. I’m getting better at it, showing it in the right place and the right time. But if I won a national championship or a Super Bowl years down the line — if I was winning, nobody would be saying anything.”

The story of Caleb Williams is far from over, as a franchise will soon crown him as their future quarterback. The learning process, as Williams put the 2023 season, will continue as the young quarterback finds his spot in the NFL beginning in April with the 2024 draft.
