We are just a day away from the start of the new college football season! It's an exciting time for everyone involved as week zero gets set for kickoff.

The USC Trojans are getting set to take on the San Jose State Spartans in their first matchup of the season, and this game should serve as a nice measuring stick for USC. San Jose State likely won't be able to keep up with the Trojans on the field, but every game matters.

This is their first chance to make a statement and prove that they belong with the upper echelon of teams across the country. The good teams don't have hiccups against the weaker opponents on their schedule, so USC can't take the Spartans for granted.

College Football analyst Joel Klatt named this game as one he wants to see this weekend. Not for the game itself, but how USC looks with their new defense and running game.

“Do I think the San Jose State game is a game that can threaten the Trojans? No. There are some things in this game that are gonna tell us a lot about USC. Are they gonna be able to run the ball well? History would suggest that they will. Then obviously the defense. Do I think USC is gonna get beat by San Jose State? No. There are metrics you can look to and see if they actually are better. One is the eye test, two is do they actually tackle?”

The Trojans should make easy work of the Spartans in this game. Their high-powered offense will likely cause problems for the San Jose State defense, but how their defense will hold up is the question.

They improved the defensive side of the ball over the offseason, but by how much? It's something to watch this season, and it will be a telling sign of how far the Trojans can go this season.
