USC Football News: NFL Columnist Identifies Caleb Williams as Tank-Worthy Quarterback Prospect
The USC Trojans are going into the 2023 season with high hopes. The 2022 Trojans were viewed as a team to make some noise but were not expected to do anything special. That wasn't the case, as USC had their best season to date, and it was all thanks to first-year coach Lincoln Riley and their transfer QB from Oklahoma, Caleb Williams.
Willaims exploded onto the scene, establishing himself as the best QB in college football, and ran away with the Heisman Trophy in his sophomore year. If he was under the radar last season, that will not be the case in 2023, as all eyes will be on Williams and the Trojans to repeat or exceed expecations this season.
The hype surrounding the 21-year-old is real in the college football aspect, but could he be able to duplicate that in the NFL? At the moment, pundits believe he can, as he is projected to be the No.1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Some are taking it a step further, dubbing him the next 'Patrick Mahomes'
"[Caleb] Williams is Patrick Mahomes," an anonymous NFL general manager told ESPN's
Matt Miller
, "but we didn't know Mahomes was him yet [when he was drafted in 2017]."

NFL columnist for Bleacher Report Brent Sobleski is sold on Williams and named a couple of teams who should be tanking for the righty gunslinger.
Sobleski named six teams, the Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, Washington Commanders, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Some of these are realistic, and others are not, like the Minnesota Vikings, who are coming off a 13-win season and will look to compete for the NFC North title once again.
The Cardinals are going to be a bad team, but will they just give up on Kyler Murray like that? He's still only 25 years old and has thrown for over three thousand yards where he finished the season. However, the Cardinals have shown in the past that they are not shy to move on from their first-round QB selections. Too soon to tell, but we need to keep an eye out for that.
The other teams listed should definitely tank or strongly consider tanking, like the Falcons, Bucs, Commanders, and Raiders. All don't have a franchise QB or are on QB carousel.
It won't be too long to identify who will be tanking, and by the end of it we'll see who will be lucky enough to select the potential number one overall pick.
