BREAKING: Former Utah WR Mikey Matthews To Transfer To Cal
The Utah Utes lost one of their promising young wide receivers Mikey Matthews to the transfer portal, and on Tuesday the California native announced he will be returning to his home state.
Matthews took to Instagram to announce that he will be transferring to Cal, which he chose over Baylor.
Matthews was ranked as the No. 101 transfer portal player, and No. 22 wide receiver in the portal with a 90 rating according to 247Sports. In his lone season in Salt Lake City, he recorded 29 catches for 261 yards and was hindered by subpar quarterback play.
His decision to enter the portal came as more of a surprising one when you consider that Cam Rising is set to return for a seventh season next year, and four-star Isaac Wilson would be set to take over the reins after Rising departs.
As for Cal, they have assembled a fairly impressive portal class that ranked as the No. 25 transfer portal class in the country before Matthews' addition. Normally a move like this would sting even more for Utah fans, but starting in 2024, Cal will be in the ACC while Utah is in the Big 12, so they will not face off against one another.
