Cam Rising Headlines Notable List of Super-Senior Quarterbacks In College Football

Due to the pandemic and injuries, there is an abundance of older quarterbacks in college football
In this story:

College football is in an odd state at the moment and it's not even because of the surge in transfers and athletes being able to profit from their Name, Image, and Likeness.

Instead, it is the sheer amount of players, most notably at the quarterback position that are older than normal. The average high school student graduates at either 17 or 18, and finishes college at 21 or 22 years of age in most cases. However, that hasn't been the case for the last few years thanks to the pandemic year in 2020, and medical redshirts as well. In order to not hold a global pandemic against them and take away eligibility, the NCAA allows athletes who were affected to get what is known as the "COVID year".

An extra year of eligibility regardless of whether you were a freshman at the time, or someone in their fifth year. It was only fair for the athletes who lost their season, but now we are seeing an epidemic in college football of older players.

Utah's Cam Rising has been catching the most flack for it as he announced a return for what will be his seventh year thanks to an impending medical redshirt, but he isn't the only old quarterback. So, let's take a look at some other notable super-senior quarterbacks who will be taking the field in 2024.

Class: 2018

He started his career at Texas where he redshirted, then transferred and had to sit out before being at Utah for what is his third year. Rising wasn't able to play this season due to a knee injury suffered during last season's Rose Bowl. He is expected to lead Utah to a conference title in 2024, for what would be their first Big 12 title as they are making the jump from the Pac-12 to the Big 12.

Joining Rising from the class of 2018 that will be returning next season is former Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras. He too was injured and was unable to play this season, and will be looking for a new place to call home as he entered his name into the portal.

After starting his career at Baylor, Gerry Bohanon transferred to USF ahead of last season where he started. He didn't play this season, and similar to Petras will be transferring elsewhere for his final season eligibility.

After starting his career at Oregon, Shough ended up transferring to Texas Tech ahead of the 2021 season. His time in Lubbock was derailed by injury, which has led to him looking for what will be his thrid school.
