Former Ute Jaylon Johnson inks massive new extension with Chicago Bears
After what was a season-long discussion and dispute with some people, including himself thinking he would be traded, former Utah star defensive back and current Chicago Bear signed a massive contract extension.
According to NBC Sports Chicago, Johnson and the Bears ended up agreeing upon a four-year extension worth up to $76 million, with $54 million in guaranteed money. The deal comes after Johnson not only earned a Pro Bowl selection, but was also named second-team All-Pro.
The best part about his deal as pointed out by Josh Schrock NBC Sports Chicago is the fact that he will have another chance to land one final massive extension when he turns 28.
This past season saw Johnson give up just 25 catches for 195 yards and one score, while racking up four picks. The former Utah star also led the NFL in passer rating allowed when targeted with an outstanding 33.3.
The Bears are looking to start what some expect to be a quick rebuild in 2024. There is a growing expectation that they will trade quarterback Justin Fields, and build around USC quarterback Caleb Williams who has been tabbed as a more polished prospect than Patrick Mahomes was when he came out of Texas Tech.
The Athletic ranks Kyle Whittingham as one of the best coaches in college football
Having a player like Johnson on defense will help set this team up for a nice window of contention.
