Kyle Whittingham Opens Up On Utah's Efforts To Bring In Transfer Quarterback
There may not be a team in the country that has been more affected by injury than Utah, but one position where they have been hurting the most is the quarterback position.
Cam Rising has been out all season due to what essentially has been described as a blown-out knee which he suffered in the Rose Bowl against Penn State. While Utah fans knew his injury wouldn't be an easy one to bounce back from, it was initially reported as an ACL injury, and head coach Kyle Whittingham was also making fans believe that there was a chance he could return for the first week of the seasons against Florida.
Now that we are five games into Utah's season and he's yet to play, there are questions swirling if even will play. There were also questions as to why Utah didn't pursue a transfer from the portal, as backups Nate Johnson and Bryson Barnes were both decent placeholders, but both struggled with consistency. When asked about the matter more, Whittingham revealed just how much effort they put into bringing in a portal signal caller.
"Did we? No, we did not. I mean, we felt at the time we were pretty set with the guys we had. Also, who were we going to be able to attract with Cam coming back?"
While hindsight is 20/20 and there was truly no way to know that projected temporary starter Brandon Rose would go down with an injury, this again reeks of not knowing the severity of Rising's injury. Utah fans are hopeful, yet skeptical, that Rising could return for their upcoming matchup against Cal.
