Former Utah Utes and San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith clapped back at Cam Newton's claims of Brock Purdy being a "game manager" on ESPN saying “As the unofficial President of the Game Manager’s Club, he’s not allowed in.”

Smith attempted to dispute the notion that the Super Bowl QB is nothing more than a "dink and dunk guy" by bringing up the fact that Purdy ranks #1 in completion percentage with 67% and #1 in pass touchdowns with 14 when passing 15 plus yards downfield this season including playoffs. In comparison, the league average for completion percentage in the same category is 47%.

This isn't the first time this season that the former Utah QB has been in the headlines for responding to a former NFL QB's assertions. Earlier in the season, Tom Brady said he thinks that "there’s a lot of mediocrity in today’s NFL” to which Smith replied, “First off, he hasn’t been retired that long.” He continued by saying, “He was just playing. Like he just won a Super Bowl in the current game. Is he discounting that one? And then, my biggest complaint with this, and no offense to you guys, he played in the most uncompetitive division, I think, in NFL history.”

Three Games Utah Fans Should Have Circled in 2024

It's fair to say that Smith isn't afraid to go toe to toe with anyone if he feels that the claim is an unfair assessment and this Purdy segment is no different. With the Super Bowl less than two weeks away, the 49ers and Purdy will look to finally put the mediocrity opinions to rest against the reigning champion Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.
