Utah reportedly 'likely' to join the Big 12

Despite wanting to make it work in the Pac-12 Utah may be headed elsewhere

The landscape of college football continues to be on an irreversible trajectory that may result in the extinction of the Pac-12.

Following a recent meeting that presented a media rights deal heavily dependent on Apple's streaming service, the Pac-12 seems to be on the cusp of breaking up for good. 247Sports' Jason Scheer reported that Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State are all 'likely' to join the Big 12.

Although it is not completely finalized yet, sources indicate that Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah are all likely to join the Big 12. One source said that it would have to fall apart for the three schools not to make the move and the ideal plan for the Big 12 is to make the biggest possible impact, which is announcing all three at once.

Scheer even said that the move could come as soon as Friday.

Although it is not set in stone, there could be an announcement as soon as Friday.

He did mention that if it were to not work out it would be on the hands of Utah, who has frequently been in support of the Pac-12. The Pac-12 likely will have time for one more attempt to salvage the conference whether it be a merger with the Mountain West or somehow stalling long enough to present another media rights deal that has more linear opportunities.
