'That's Your Fault!' Utah Utes Coach Kyle Whittingham Offers 'Two Cents' on Sign Stealing
Sign stealing is a controversial topic.
It's one that's heavily debated, highly scrutinized and — if taken to an extreme — extremely damaging. Michigan is a prime example of that, but certainly not the only.
Throughout college football, the practice is ever-present. Whether it be from provided practice film, during the team's other games, or even during the matchup itself, it happens. Constantly. But that's where things get hairy.
Trying to gain a competitive advantage, as many would argue, isn't innately wrong. But sign stealing — as that same population would likely agree with — takes things a step further.
But Utah Utes coach Kyle Whittingham doesn't fall into that population. In fact, he was rather blunt when asked about his stance during his weekly press conference.
“In my opinion, in game ... if you're getting your signs stolen, that's your fault," Whittingham said. "Because they're too simplistic and too easy. In game, I think that's kind of commonplace, people try to pick up on signs with each other.“
“Where it gets dicey is if you do things outside of the game and that type of thing.”
So, Whittingham does agree with the sensitivity of the issue. Going out of the way to study opposing teams' signals and gameplan seems to be universally frowned upon, which he understands. He might not have gone into too much detail, but there's a reason.
Trying to remain neutral is a good move, especially when the repercussions can involve job security in the worst case scenario. Whittingham's job isn't currently at risk, but his rather vague responses only help solidify that.
Plus, at least he was honest.
The Utah Utes will host College GameDay against the Oregon Ducks Saturday for a chance to improve to 7-1 and make up for their loss to Oregon State — hopefully with no sign-stealing involved.
Kickoff from Rice-Eccles stadium is set for 2:30 p.m.
