Utah's Kyle Whittingham doubts the Holy War with BYU will be permanent, hints at more realignment
You would think that now that the Big 12 appears to be done with expansion, that there wouldn't be much more realignment talk with the season just days away but here we are.
Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham was asked about moving to the Big 12 and his thoughts on their rivalry game with BYU, The Holy War, becoming a "permanent" conference game. Something Whittingham made sure to address when chatting with EPSN's Spence Checketts, explaining that realistically the landscape of college football is never permanent and that conference realignment could happen again.
“Well first of all, you use the word permanently, and I can say it’s far from that. I think in 2-3, maybe 5 years on the outside, everything is gonna change again. And so this may be just a quick couple years of the game returning, and then everything is blown up again and people go their separate ways.”
Earlier in the interview Whittingham also expressed that he personally felt the rivalry doesn't have the same feel to it when the two teams aren't in the same conference. So, clearly the coach who has been very public about believing college football is headed towards a couple super conferences is not confident that the conferences as we see them right now and heading into next year, will be the same.
