Utah's quarterback battle is 'in flux' ahead of season opener against Florida
The talk of the town when it comes to Utah football in 2023 is who will be behind center for their Week 1 matchup against Florida.
Cam Rising has been nursing a knee injury that he suffered during the Rose Bowl last season, and based on recent comments made by head coach Kyle Whittingham his successor is nowhere close to being chosen. The Utes, who recently came in as the No. 14 team in the coaches poll are in the midst of a three-horse race for the backup quarterback role, which could end up being the starter if rising can't go.
Brandon Rose, Nate Johnson, and Bryson Barnes have all been duking it out, and based on comments made by the head coach no one has created separation.
"The quarterback situation is still in flux, no update there, we're in the exact same position that we were last week," Whittingham told UteZone.
In terms of where the group was last week, Brandon Rose was viewed as being ahead of Nate Johnson and Bryson Barnes, as he took the QB2 reps and the QB1 reps that Rising couldn't take. However, being that it is still 'in flux' and Barnes who was once viewed as no longer in the picture during spring ball is now back in the thick of it, it is safe to assume that there may be some issues at signal caller right now. Whittingham explained what Barnes has done better than the other two that has really helped his positioning.
"He's just making less mistakes, he knows the offense better than the other two, he's a little more consistent, a little more steady," he said. "The other two guys have bright futures, can make some spectacular plays here and there, but it's all about taking care of the ball and moving the chains."
The team is set to have a huge scrimmage on Thursday, which they are hoping will allow for one of the quarterbacks to ascend above the rest as they look to turn their attention towards Florida soon.
