The Curious Case Of Kalijah Lipscomb
Vanderbilt's loss to South Carolina left more than just the bitter taste of defeat in the mouths of the team and its fans.
While the Commodores were buy losing on the field inside WIlliams-Brice Stadium, their best wide receiver, Kalijah Lipscomb was busy standing on the sidelines, in uniform wearing a towel rather than a helmet on his head.
It's the second time this season we've seen this one. It happened during the UNLV loss.
During that game Vanderbilt radio reported he was not injured, however Derek Mason stated it was a foot issue during his post game comments.
Last night with Lipscomb standing on the sidelines, television cameras repeatedly showed him standing there in uniform, seemingly uninjured and even bouncing about at times.
Entering the season, Lipscomb was considered the Commodores top wide receiver and one of their "big three" offensive weapons along with Ke'Shawn Vaugh and Jared Pinkney.
Of those three, only Vaughn has produced like a top weapon.
Pinkney continues to play but appears lost as the offense can't seem to figure out a way to get him the football. He was held without a recpetion and just one target versus South Carolina. That's been the case most of the season.
It's been a similar situation for Lipscomb, though he has had moments of being a top target.
But what happened in Columbia last night leaves many more questions than answers.
Per Mason's post game comments following the Carolina loss, Lipscomb is reportedly not injured, but rather working through some "personal" issues.
I'm not hear to speculate what that might be, or to question how or why he is having "issues" at this point, but as a marginal NFL talent, his absence is not a good thing in the eyes of those who evaluate players at the next level.
The NFL might not be his goal, and whatever the issues he is dealing with could certainty be far more important than football, but the look shown the world on national television last night was not a good one.
I'm willing to bet we haven't heard the last of this and that it will come up Tuesday when Mason holds his weekly press conference at Vanderbilt Stadium.
