Too Much Tigers For Vanderbilt As LSU Rolls to 4-0
If you like offense then Vanderbilt Stadium was a place for you on Saturday as the Vanderbilt Commodores and LSU Tigers combined for 973 yards and 104 points. Unfortunately for the Commodores, LSU dominated both total yards and points in their 66-38 win.
LSU senior quarterback, and likely Heisman candidate Joe Burrow lead the Tigers to the majority of their 599 yards. He was replaced by backup Myles Brennan late in the 4th quarter. Before his exit, Burrow passed for 398 yards and 6 touchdowns, completing 25 of 34 attempts.
Vanderbilt did win the time of possession, holding the ball 32:33 compared to 27:27 for the Tigers.
While Burrow set an LSU single game record with his 6 touchdown passed, Vanderbilt also set a new record.
The Commodores defense has allowed 138 points through the first three games of the season, surpassing the old mark of 137 set by the 1978 Commodores squad.
LSU's 66 point performace was not the highest number ever allowed by a Commodore team. The 1917 Commodores squad allowed 8-3 points to Georgia Tech in a shutout loss. Florida deposited 71 points on Vanderbilt in The Swamp in 2001 while Alabama rolled up 66 points in 1978 making today's 66 points the third highest point toal ever against Vanderbilt.
It was not the wosre defeat in recent years on West End, as two years ago Alabama rolled through and pounded the COmmodores 59-0 enroute to a national championship.
We'll have to wait and see how far this bunch of Tigers can go this season, but their offense looks more than capable of carrying them far, even if their defense is somewhat less than we are accustomed to seeing from LSU. .
Vanderbilt returns to action next Saturday at 11 AM as Northern Illinois visits Vanderbilt Stadium.
