Illinois head coach Lovie Smith and Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn let go
College football saw more firings over the weekend with two head coaches let go on Sunday. Auburn announced that coach Gus Malzahn was relieved of his duties effective immediately. Malzahn was 68-35 in eight seasons as the coach of the Tigers. Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will serve as the interim head coach as the Tigers prepare for a bowl game.
Malzahn wasn’t the only coach to make headlines this weekend as Lovie Smith was also let go from Illinois. The Former Chicago Bears coach served as the head coach for the Fighting Illini for five seasons and went 17-39. Illinois stated that a lack of progress quote "at the rate we should expect" is the reason for Smith's departure. Illinois is currently 2-5 in the regular season and is slated to play an eighth game during the Big Ten championship weekend.
