No. 8 UVA Men's Tennis Sweeps Virginia Tech, Claims Commonwealth Clash Point

The Cavaliers secured another point towards their score in the 2022-2023 Commonwealth Clash as the No. 8 Virginia men's tennis team turned in a dominant performance, sweeping Virginia Tech 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Boar's Head Sports Club. 

UVA got off to a strong start with Chris Rodesch and William Woodall earning a 6-1 win over Alvaro Ariza and Alberto Orso on court 2 in doubles play. No. 53 Inaki Montes and Ryan Goetz picked up a 6-3 win over No. 18 Ryan Fishback and Jordan Chrysostom on court 1 to clinch the doubles point for the Cavaliers. 

In singles play, Rodesch made quick work of Ariza on court 2, winning 6-1, 6-2 and Mans Dahlberg did the same on court 5, defeating Frank Thompson 6-4, 6-2. Jeffrey von der Schulenburg had the honor of clinching the match, as he beat Scott Sculley 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 on court 3. Ryan Goetz defeated Chrysostom 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 on court 4 to make it 5-0. After dropping the first set, Alexander Kiefer bounced back to beat Alex Ix 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 on court 6. Finally, in the only matchup between ranked singles players, No. 37 Inaki Montes took down No. 70 Ryan Fishback 6-4, 6-2 to complete the 7-0 sweep for Virginia. 

That was UVA's third-straight sweep and the Cavaliers have now won 40-consecutive matches against ACC opponents.

Now 15-4 and 7-0 in ACC play, UVA is on the road this weekend with matches at Boston College on Friday and No. 13 Harvard on Sunday.
