Virginia was already expected to be well-represented on Team USA for the 2024 Olympic Games next summer in Paris. But now it's official. UVA swimming & diving head coach Todd DeSorbo has been named the head coach of the U.S. women's swimming team for the 2024 Olympic Games, as announced by USA Swimming on Thursday. Florida swim & dive head coach Anthony Nesty will serve as the head coach of the U.S. men's swimming team.

“I’m excited to be leading Team USA next summer in Paris,” DeSorbo said. “I’m looking forward to working with Anthony and the rest of the USA Swimming staff to help the athletes perform at the highest level in Paris.”

DeSorbo and Nesty served on Team USA's coaching staff as assistants at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. In those Olympics, the United States won 30 total medals, 18 of which were won by four UVA swimmers. DeSorbo and Nesty were also head coaches at the 2022 FINA World Championships, leading the Americans to a record 45 total medals. DeSorbo coached the women to 23 of those medals and nine of those medals were earned by Virginia swimmers.

UVA has been very well represented on Team USA in several international events over the last few years and that should be the case once again next summer, with Kate Douglass, Alex Walsh, Gretchen Walsh, and other current and former Cavaliers expected to be among the top contenders to earn a spot on the Team USA pool roster, which will be determined at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials next June in Indianapolis.

Before then, though, DeSorbo and the Cavaliers will look to continue their dynasty in collegiate swimming by winning their fourth-consecutive NCAA national title.
