The Virginia men's and women's cross country teams placed third in their respective races at the 2023 ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee Florida. The Cavaliers placed better than Virginia Tech in both races, earning two more points in the 2023-2024 Commonwealth Clash, which UVA now leads 4-0.

In the men's 8k, Will Anthony (23:21.5) and Gary Martin (23:24.7) led the way for the Cavaliers, finishing seventh and eighth respectively. Yasin Sado (23:33.1) and Nate Mountain (23:36.9) crossed the finish line back-to-back in 13th and 14th and Jack Eliason, Jacob Hunter, and Wes Porter scored with 36th, 39th, and 41st placements. Anthony, Martin, Sado, and Mountain earned All-ACC honors. Virginia's 77-point total was good for third overall, trailing Syracuse and North Carolina.

In the women's 6k, the Cavaliers placed third at the ACC Championships for the second year in a row with 82 total points, trailing Notre Dame and NC State. Margot Appleton had the top finish, placing fifth in 19:44.5 and Jenny Schilling joined her in the top 10 with a 10th place finish in 20:04.6. Caroline Timm (20:20.3) and Anna Workman (20:21.9) also earned All-ACC honors, placing 15th and 20th, respectively. Gillian Bushee, Cate DeSousa, and Lila Fenner finished 32nd, 70th, and 78th.

“The men showed great improvement from last year, going from sixth place to third place this year. Our first four men ran great. Our women ran tough and did well to place third as a team," said Virginia's director Vin Lananna. "It was a great competitive effort by all men and women, resulting in eight All-ACC performances and a pair of third place team finishes. We are well positioned for the NCAA regionals in two weeks.”

Virginia earned two points in the Commonwealth Clash for finishing above Virginia Tech in both races. With UVA's men's and women's soccer teams also defeating Virginia Tech recently, the Cavaliers now lead the 2023-2024 Commonwealth Clash 4-0.
