Virginia Tennis Teams Go 3-0 in Weekend Road Matches
Virginia's tennis teams played three road matches this weekend and went 3-0 with the No. 13 UVA men's tennis team picking up victories at Louisville on Friday and at Notre Dame on Sunday and No. 11 Virginia women's tennis earning a 4-1 victory at UCF on Friday in Orlando.
Men's Tennis: Virginia 4, Louisville 2
Louisville opened the match by taking the doubles point with victories on courts 1 and 3 as UVA quickly fell behind 1-0. Alexander Kiefer got the Cavaliers on the board with a 6-0, 6-3 win on court 6 over Louisville's Sergio Hernandez and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg won 7-5, 6-4 over Fabien Salle on court 3 to put Virginia ahead 2-1. Ryan Goetz made it three in a row for UVA with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Matthew Fung on court 4, before Louisville answered back with No. 36 Etienne Donnet taking down No. 37 Inaki Montes 6-4, 6-4 on court 2. Virginia freshman Mans Dahlberg secured the victory with a thrilling 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over David Mizrahi on court 5. The top court was in the midst of a heavyweight battle between No. 25 Chris Rodesch and No. 60 Natan Rodrigues, who were tied at 5-5 in the third set when the match ended from Dahlberg's win.
Women's Tennis: Virginia 4, Central Florida 1
UCF picked up a win on court 3 in doubles play, but Virginia's teams of Melodie Collard and Julia Adams as well as Elaine Chervinsky and Natasha Subhash managed to secure narrow victories on courts 1 and 2 to clinch the doubles point for the Cavaliers. Sara Ziodato defeated Sophia Biolay 6-2, 6-2 on court 5 to make it 2-0 in favor of Virginia, but UCF got on the board as Stefani Webb defeated Elaine Chervinsky 6-3, 6-3 on court 3. Hibah Shaikh then beat Jantje Tilbuerger 6-4, 6-0 on court 4 to make it 3-1 UVA. The top court was a battle between No. 44 Julia Adams of Virginia and No. 30 Marie Mattel of UCF. Mattel took the first set 6-1, but Adams bounced back to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to secure the victory.
Men's Tennis: Virginia 5, Notre Dame 2
Virginia took the doubles point with victories by Inaki Montes and Ryan Goetz on court 2 and Alexander Kiefer and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg on court 3. Montes added a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jean-Marc Malkowski on court 2 and Alexander Kiefer defeated Noah Becker 6-1, 6-1 to give UVA a commanding 3-0 lead. Ryan Goetz secured the win with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Connor Fu on court 4. With the match already decided, Notre Dame won the singles matches on courts 1 and 4 before Mans Dahlberg punctuated the 5-2 win with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-4 victory over Yu Zhang on court 5.
Now 12-4 and 4-0 in ACC play, UVA men's tennis returns home for a pair of ranked ACC matches against No. 9 North Carolina on Friday and No. 12 Duke on Sunday at Boar's Head. Virginia women's tennis is 10-3 and 3-1 in the ACC and will also be at home next weekend, hosting Notre Dame on Friday and Louisville on Sunday at Boar's Head.
