Baseball is very rarely a one-man show. But on Tuesday afternoon at Disharoon Park, the Cavaliers were carried to victory almost single-handedly by Kyle Teel. UVA used five different pitchers to hold the Keydets scoreless and Kyle Teel drove in all three runs to lead Virginia to a 3-0 victory over VMI on Tuesday.

Teel had an opportunity get the Cavaliers on the board in the bottom of the first as he came up to bat with a runner on second and two outs, but he struck out looking to end the inning. When he got the opportunity again in the third inning, Teel didn't miss it. Griff O'Ferrall started a two-out rally for Virginia in the third with a single and then advanced to third base on a single from Ethan O'Donnell. After a Jake Gelof walk loaded the bases, Teel came to the plate and blooped a 3-1 pitch into shallow center field for a two-run single.

Teel brought his A-game defensively as well, helping to get Virginia out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth inning. UVA starting pitcher Connelly Early allowed just one base runner through the first three innings, but then got into some trouble with two runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings. Early got himself out of the fourth-inning jam with back-to-back strikeouts and then his catcher Kyle Teel helped him out in the fifth, as Teel fired down to first base to impressively pick off a runner to end the inning.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Virginia added a third run in the bottom of the seventh on another big hit from Teel. Jake Gelof drew a two-out walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Teel came up and delivered an RBI double to left center field, scoring Gelof to give Virginia a 3-0 lead.

It was a very quiet day for any Virginia hitter not named Kyle Teel, but it turns out three runs was plenty for the UVA pitching staff. Connelly Early went five innings, allowing just three hits and two walks and striking out eight batters. Alex Greene took over in the sixth and got the first two outs of the inning but then gave up a walk. Angelo Tonas came in and got the third out of the inning. Jake Berry preserved the shutout by pitching a scoreless seventh and eighth inning and then Jay Woolfolk retired the side in the ninth to seal the victory.

Now 8-0 on the season, Virginia remains at home for a four-game series against Rhode Island this weekend. Game 1 is set for 3pm on Friday at Disharoon Park.
