Another member of the 2023 Virginia baseball team has made the leap to Major League Baseball. UVA pitcher Brian Edgington signed a free agent deal with the Cincinnati Reds this week, becoming the sixth Cavalier from the 2023 team to sign with an MLB franchise this summer.

A native of Hatboro, Pennsylvania, Edgington transferred to Virginia from Elon and gave the team a massive lift on the mound in his lone season as a Cavalier. Edgington appeared in 18 games, including 15 starts, and turned in a 9-3 record with a 3.57 ERA. He registered 94 strikeouts to just 23 walks and surrendered 35 earned runs in 88.1 innings pitched. Edgington garnered a Third-Team All-ACC selection for his solid regular season, but he stepped it up a notch in postseason play.

In his first-career start in the NCAA Tournament, Edgington pitched five perfect innings as Virginia opened the tournament with a dominant 15-1 victory over Army. The following weekend, Edgington pitched a complete game in UVA's 12-2 victory over Duke in game 3 of the Charlottesville Super Regional, a win that clinched the program's sixth trip to the College World Series. In what was his second-career complete game, Edgington gave up just two earned runs on nine hits and posted a season-high 11 strikeouts.

After going undrafted in the 2023 MLB Draft, Edgington briefly signed with the West Virginia Black Bears of the MLB Draft League. In two starts for the Black Bears, Edgington posted a 1-0 record with a 1.64 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. Edgington gave up just one earned run and one walk to 11 strikeouts in those two appearances.

Now, Edgington joins the Cincinnati Reds, an organization which also drafted UVA center fielder Ethan O'Donnell in the sixth round of the 2023 MLB Draft. Former Cavalier pitcher Andrew Abbott plays for the Reds as well and is in the midst of a phenomenal rookie campaign.

Six members of the 2023 Virginia baseball team have signed with MLB teams this summer, including four signed draft picks and two undrafted free agent signings:

  • Kyle Teel (drafted 14th overall in the 1st round) signed with the Boston Red Sox for $4,000,000
  • Jake Gelof (drafted 60th overall in the 2nd round) signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for $1,334,400
  • Connelly Early (drafted 151st overall in the 5th round) signed with the Boston Red Sox for $408,500
  • Ethan O'Donnell (drafted 168th overall in the 6th round) signed with the Cincinnati Reds for $307,500
  • Jake Berry signed with the Cleveland Guardians as a free agent
  • Brian Edgington signed with the Cincinnati Reds as a free agent
