Report: Virginia to Play in 2024 Baha Mar Bahamas Hoops Championship
The new college basketball season has just begun, but we're already looking ahead to the 2024-2025 season, as some of the pieces of UVA's non-conference schedule for next year are already starting to be revealed. According to a report from Jon Rothstein on Tuesday, Virginia will reportedly be participating in the 2024 Baha Mar Bahamas Hoops Championship in a four-team field that includes Baylor, Tennessee, and St. John's.
Rothstein says an official announcement for the tournament is expected soon, but we won't know the details regarding the schedule or the matchups until later next year. The tournament will take place at the Baha Mar Convention, Arts & Entertainment Center in Nassau. The 2023 edition of the Baha Mar Bahamas Hoops Championship features Miami, Georgia, Providence, and Kansas State.
Virginia last played in the Bahamas in the 2018-2019 season, defeating Middle Tennessee, Dayton, and Wisconsin to win the Battle 4 Atlantis. Of course, UVA went on to win the 2019 National Championship that season.
This season, UVA is participating in the Fort Myers Tip-Off in Fort Myers, Florida. The Cavaliers will face Wisconsin on Monday, November 20th and then either SMU or West Virginia on the following Wednesday. Virginia is looking to claim its ninth November tournament title in the last ten seasons.
Virginia won its eighth November tournament championship last season by defeating Baylor and Illinois in the Continental Tire Main Event in Las Vegas. The Cavaliers and Bears could meet for just the third time ever in the Bahamas next fall.
UVA could also face Tennessee for the first time since 2013. The Cavaliers hold an 8-5 advantage over the Volunteers in the all-time series, which began back in 1917.
St. John's, which is now under the direction of Rick Pitino, has met Virginia eight times all-time. The Red Storm own a 7-1 record against the Cavaliers, but UVA won the most recent meeting, which took place in the 2013 NIT. Tony Bennett is 5-1 coaching against Pitino head-to-head.
